Birth Story
May 22, 1995 early Monday morning, my mom was working at McDonald's in Aspen, though she lived in Glenwood near Spring Valley. It was a normal Monday, just like any other. Suddenly my mother's blood pressure skyrocketed, as she was about to go into labor with me. She went on leave from work and was brought to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood. She wasn't able to go into labor on her own, so the doctor decided to induce labor. The nursing staff had to start her on a Pitocin I.V. drip to kick start her labor, but the nurse who came in to do it was a rookie and kept digging into her veins and her veins kept collapsing on the nurse. After a few attempts my mom couldn't take the pain any more and asked the nurse to get a pediatric nurse to do the insertion of the needle. The nurse obliged, and the pediatric nurse got it on the first attempt. My mom says she was so good she could have thrown the syringe from across the room and hit the mark. My mom was rather relieved to not have to suffer through the pain of being stabbed repeatedly by the needle any longer. Once the I.V. was in place and the medicine started, she settled into her hospital bed and watched T.V. It was a long boring day, as nothing happened. At about nine p.m. she told my grandma (it was her birthday) "I guess I'll have to waddle to the gift shop to get you something, because I think there'll be a delayed delivery on this package." Later that night, the doctor ordered her I.V. drip to be stopped and continued the next morning, stating he wanted her to get some sleep. When in reality, what he really meant was he didn't want to have to get up in the middle of the night to deliver a baby. What my mom didn't know was that her body would have to start the labor over from the beginning because it was an induced birth and not a natural. The following Tuesday afternoon, the doctor and nurse ushered everyone out of her room so they could break her water. Once that was done, labor progressed a tiny bit more quickly. She was definitely feeling more like a laboring woman rather than Humpty Dumpty just sitting there. By that evening she was very uncomfortable! The back of the baby's head was wiggling and rubbing against the nerve endings in her spine and she was encouraged to get up and move around. But she was scared, the pain was barely tolerable as it was, she was afraid it might get worse if she moved. Due to insurance reasons, they refused to give her any pain relief. The only thing they gave her during the entire 3 days was a tiny bit of Demerol, when they broke her water, which they soon found out she was allergic to, since she threw up. The pain was intense, and the surgeon came in to check on her, as he would be performing a c-section if a natural delivery became too dangerous. The surgeon decided to turn the baby while in the womb, to flip it face down and take the pressure off her raw spinal nerve endings and thus relieve back labor. The procedure was complete and the surgeon told her "That baby can't be more than 4 or 5 pounds, you need to get up off your ass if you don't want surgery!" She was already in so much pan just lying there, and feared getting up would cause worse pain to ensue, but she got up and walked around the hospital for a little bit. Once again, that night, they stopped the drip so she'd get sleep, well more so because the doctor didn't want to deliver a baby in the middle of the night. Wednesday morning dawned and the nurse started up her I.V. rather quickly, and my mom's contractions grew more intense. It was still a very long day, and just as the doctor was about to give her no choice but to be prepped for a c-section. Her labor finally progressed enough that she was told to push. By that time, it'd been three days and she was too exhausted to push with any oomph, so the doctor had to perform a vacuum extraction. Megan Rose was born at 5:41 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24th 1995. I weighed 10 pounds even and my mom couldn't have felt more blessed... or relieved.

My mom is kind, generous, genuine, and above all else, amazing. My mother is the strongest woman I know. She's raised two wonderful kids by herself while working nights or sometimes no job at all. But somehow she managed to keep a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, and clothes on our bodies. She's always tried to keep us happy and give us what we needed even though it meant she would go without. Some say to have kids is to sacrifice your happiness. No. To have kids is to share happiness on the deepest levels of human connection.

My little sister is annoying, loud and an overall brat. but I wouldn't trade her for anything in the world, because without her I wouldn't be who I am today. I was 5 almost 6 when she was born, our mom was a single mother, working night shifts. So naturally I became big sissy and her other role model. As the years went on my mother relied on me more to help raise my sister because there was no one else. Sure it was difficult with Rachel's mental issues, but it's been worth it. She's turned into such a bright young lady, almost all A's in school, creative and interested in EVERYTHING! She's been a huge influence on my life, teaching me what it's like to live with someone who has special needs and how it is to deal with her issues on a daily basis. She helped me grow up, granted it was at a young age, but it paved the way to the path I'm on today.

Pivotal Moment
My pivotal moment in life was when I decided to go back to school. I dropped out of school for 3 years in my senior year, after my grandmother had passed away. I spiraled into the seemingly endless pit of depression and so did my mother. I tried to pull myself out several times, for my mother's sake. For three years my family tried endlessly to get me motivated to go back. I had no intention of going back, I was just going to get my GED and figure it out from there. I did try Job Corps, I lasted 4 days. They sent me home because of how deep I'd fallen into depression. It had become so bad I was considering suicide... If it weren't for my friends and family encouraging me to go back to school. I think the thing that sparked the thought to come to Yampah was a friend of mine saying it was a pretty interesting school. I finally gave in and decided to give it one more try, I slowly got out of my depression as the school year went on. Being around others in similar situations such as myself, and the teachers being so willing to help me get to where I need to be, helped me overcome my depressive mood swings.

Religious/Spiritual Beliefs
I was raised in a catholic setting up until the age of 12, I then studied various beliefs. Buddhism and Wicca are the two that inspired me the most. I now practice Wicca. A lot of people consider Wicca and Satanism the same thing, when in reality they couldn't be more opposite. Satanism, as stated in the name of it, is the worship of the devil. Wicca is the worship of Mother Nature and the practice of "Magick" which is actually just a focus of energy. Wiccan's do not generally believe in Satan, just the powers of negative and positive energy. The three rules I've taken from my studies of different religions and spiritual beliefs are; 1) The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. 2) The Wiccan Rede: An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will. 3) Karma: What you put out into the universe will return 3 fold. Each of these rules is similar to one another, They all basically state; what you do, you will have done to you.

The Wiccan Rede
Bide within the Law you must, in perfect Love and perfect Trust. Live you must and let to live, fairly take and fairly give. For tread the Circle thrice about to keep unwelcome spirits out. To bind the spell well every time, let the spell be said in rhyme. Light of eye and soft of touch, speak you little, listen much. Honor the Old Ones in deed and name, let love and light be our guides again. Deosil go by the waxing moon, chanting out the joyful tune. Widdershins go when the moon doth wane, and the werewolf howls by the dread wolfsbane. When the Lady's moon is new, kiss the hand to Her times two. When the moon rides at Her peak then your heart's desire seek. Heed the North winds mighty gale, lock the door and trim the sail. When the Wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast. When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss you on the mouth. When the wind whispers from the West, all hearts will find peace and rest. Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them fast and burn them slow. Birch in the fire goes to represent what the Lady knows. Oak in the forest towers with might, in the fire it brings the God's insight. Rowan is a tree of power causing life and magick to flower. Willows at the waterside stand ready to help us to the Summerland. Hawthorn is burned to purify and to draw faerie to your eye. Hazel-the tree of wisdom and learning adds its strength to the bright fire burning. White are the flowers of Apple tree that brings us fruits of fertility. Grapes grow upon the vine giving us both joy and wine. Fir does mark the evergreen to represent immortality seen. Elder is the Lady's tree burn it not or cursed you'll be. Four times the Major Sabbats mark in the light and in the dark. As the old year starts to wane the new begins, it's now Samhain. When the time for Imbolc shows watch for flowers through the snows. When the wheel begins to turn soon the Beltane fires will burn. As the wheel turns to Lamas night power is brought to magick rite. Four times the Minor Sabbats fall use the Sun to mark them all. When the wheel has turned to Yule light the log the Horned One rules. In the spring, when night equals day time for Ostara to come our way. When the Sun has reached it's height time for Oak and Holly to fight. Harvesting comes to one and all when the Autumn Equinox does fall. Heed the flower, bush, and tree by the Lady blessed you'll be. Where the rippling waters go cast a stone, the truth you'll know. When you have and hold a need, harken not to others greed. With a fool no season spend or be counted as his friend. Merry Meet and Merry Part bright the cheeks and warm the heart. Mind the Three-fold Laws you should three times bad and three times good. When misfortune is enow wear the star upon your brow. Be true in love this you must do unless your love is false to you. These Eight words the Rede fulfill: "An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will" |
"Beauty"
Beauty to me is the ability to be yourself in a society that profits on insecurities and low self-esteem. It's being able to take off your mask in a world that looks down on uniqueness. To be able to express who you truly are, that is beautiful to me.

"Friendship"
Friendship to me is when two humans connect, their energies are on the same wavelength and causes a mutual understanding between the two. It's not about the big things, but the little things that add up to one whole. A true friend is someone who doesn't tell you what you want to hear, they tell you what you need to hear, the truth.
